Depthing Tool
A depthing tool is used to determine the ideal engagement between the teeth of two wheels. The wheels are set in parallel centers and the engagement of their teeth is adjusted by means of a large screw in the base of the tool. Once the ideal engagement is determined, the steel compass points on the end of each of the centers can be used to mark out the ideal working distance (depthing) of the wheels on a mainplate or bridge.
