Glossary/Peg Out

Peg Out
Pegging out the jewel of an automatic bridge

Following the initial cleaning of a watch movement, residue from dried-out lubricants can often still be observed on the surface of the jewels. Such residue will hinder the timepiece from functioning optimally and should be removed. One of the most effective ways to remove dried on lubrication and other debris from the jewels is to "peg out" the holes by pressing the sharpened point of a piece of peg wood into the center of each jewel and rotating it until the surface is cleared.
