Glossary/Equation Dial

Equation Dial

An equation dial is an extra dial on a clock showing the equation of time, so that a sundial could be used to set the clock to mean time.

Equation dials were first made by Tompion and Daniel Quare circa 1695. It was only the accuracy of the anchor escapement that made the difference between sundial and clock apparent.
