Glossary/End Stone

End Stone

An end stone is a flat circular bearing jewel to take the end-thrust of a pivot. Used particularly for watch balances to eliminate friction that would otherwise be caused by the shoulder of the balance staff rubbing against the underside of its jewel setting. Nearly all end stones are made of synthetic ruby. In the past, diamond or natural gemstone were used because of their hardness and resistance to wear.
