Glossary/Cylinder Escapement
Cylinder Escapement
The cylinder escapement is a form of escapement perfected by George Graham in 1725 with a half cylinder on the balance staff which releases and is impulsed by the escape wheel teeth. It replaced the verge escapement, and came into its own again in the nineteenth century for mass produced watches and clocks, until it was replaced by the pin lever escapement.
The cylinder escapement is also sometimes called the 'horizontal escapement'.
